Proper use of a Choke Chain – Part 2
When your dog was a puppy and its mother wanted to correct it, she would grasp the pup by the scruff. This is the action the choke chain is simulating and it lets your dog know through a familiar action that it is misbehaving. The collar sits up behind the dog’s ears to provide this motion, not around the throat or neck.
Before using the choke chain on your pet, make certain you know how to use it properly. You can seriously harm your dog if you don’t. Make sure that the links move smoothly and don’t catch. The choke chain is for training and no matter how nice you think it looks on Rover, it is not a full time collar. It should go on for training and come off when the training session is done. Under no circumstances should you allow a child near a pet wearing a choke chain.

Proper use of a choke chain – Part 1
Many, if not most, people call the slip collar a choke chain or choke collar, giving the impression that this useful training device is some cruel torture apparatus. Nothing could be further from the truth when the slip collar is used correctly. This type of collar actually comes in chain, fabric, cord, and as a flat strap.
The use of a dog choke chain for training has been controversial ever since the concept was first introduced. The idea of choking a dog in order to obtain its obedience appears to becounterproductive to many.
There doesn’t appear to be agreement among professional dog people, either. You can see choke collar type devices in prevalent use at dog shows, but many veterinarians will say that they are unnecessary.
Most people will admit that a choke collar can be useful when an animal is undisciplined. However, this is not the purpose of a choke collar and should not be used for this purpose. Choke collars and chains are for training and can be highly effective and safe when used correctly. Setting the choke collar around his neck should your pet that it’s time to give you his attention.
There aren’t very many styles of choke chain or collar to choose from — prong, chain or nylon. You can also find a combination of the two, which some feel is easier to use because there is less chance of the chain links getting caught on each other. Before buying, you need to measure your dog’s neck, a little behind the ears, add the width of two fingers, and add another two and one-half inches. If your local pet store allows it, take your furry friend for a ride and have him properly fitted at the store.

German Shepherd Puppy Socialization – Part 4
As your dog begins processing all the new stimuli you’re introducing him to, he will quickly learn that it’s not such a big bad world he lives in. When walking your dog, vary your route from time to time so that he is exposed to different sounds, smells, people and animals. If your dog seems to show aggression toward other dogs, remain as calm as you possibly can. This is often the product of their breeding or past experience. Introducing them to new, friendly dogs will generally make him behave better with other strange dogs he meets. Supervised play-dates with friend’s dogs or classroom situations as discussed earlier are often enough to alleviate dog-aggression. Neutering male dogs is often recommended as well, because oftentimes dog-aggression is displayed as a means of showing dominance over another animal or responding to the other animal’s dominant stance or actions. Neutered males tend to be less aggressive overall. When walking the dog and another dog approaches, keep the dog’s leash loose, not taut. Remember, that the dog can pick up on your feelings, and if you’re holding him back there must be a reason for it and he may act aggressively because he feels that is what you expect of him. In cases where the other dog is the aggressor, it is best just to turn and go the other way.
Socialization is something that should be an ongoing process throughout the dog’s life. Dog owners have noted that their dogs sometimes become unsociable as they get older. When looking for the cause it is often determined that the dog no longer has the interaction with other people and animals it once did. Dogs are, by nature, sociable pack animals and they thrive on interaction. Just as we humans “learn something new every day,” our dogs do too. If we isolate ourselves we tend to become less sociable and if we isolate our dogs we can expect nothing less of them.
A well-socialized dog will be a well-mannered dog, providing basic commands are taught as well. Your socialized and trained dog will be a happy dog as well, eager to learn something new about this wonderful world he lives in.
